In 2013, the Ministry of Agriculture published a report claiming that over 70% of horses taken from animals raised in rural areas were found to be free from disease and 80% of the cull operations were performed in the past 20 years.
The department’s director for the region, Chris Lewis, said the police, who will be present at the meeting, have been working closely with the Animal Control Authority (ACE) to help address these issues.
“I would encourage people to share photographs of where their animals had been killed to help identify the animals that were illegally killed in our culls and how best to remove them from the farms,” he said.
He said the police have already spoken to local agricultural companies and farmers and he would urge those responsible to provide information on their operations and the best way to identify illegal slaughter.
The ministry has been working closely with the ACE to find out what actions were taken in each instance in order to improve the health of farm animals across the country. “We are supporting ACE and the police at all levels and will work closely with ACE on the development of best practice and regulations as they develop,” he said.
